As mentioned before; Systems represent a logical connection between components. Components represent occurrences of Items/Item types and can either have system :

In both cases the Classification must be set on the item so that it can generate unique codes for the occurrences.

To set an Classification to an Item, select an Item and set the Classification in the properties window (under Classification).
